Visitor Seminar by Prof. Peter Knees on Digital Humanism

HICUP Lab hosted Prof. Peter Knees from TU Wien. During his visit, he gave a seminar titled “Digital Humanism – Actively and Inclusively Shaping the Digital Transformation.”

Prof. Peter Knees is a full professor for information processing and retrieval at the Faculty of Informatics, TU Wien. For nearly two decades, Peter has been a leading researcher in music information retrieval, with contributions to multimedia and text information retrieval, recommender systems, and digital arts. As the UNESCO Chair for Digital Humanism, he focuses on responsible AI, digital literacy, and bridging technological innovation with human-centred values.

The seminar addressed the role of digitisation and artificial intelligence in transforming society, science, and the public sphere. Prof. Knees discussed these developments from the perspective of digital humanism, with attention to democratic values, transparency, and social responsibility in technological innovation. The talk covered algorithmic decision-making, power and dependency structures in digital infrastructures, and the role of skills and education in digital transformation. Prof. Knees also presented the activities of the Digital Humanism Initiative and the UNESCO Chair on Digital Humanism at TU Wien.
