In the fast-paced world of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Augmented Reality (AR), HICUP Lab continues to make strong collaborations globally. The latest testament to its strong presence and reputation in these fields comes from its fruitful partnership with the Interactive Media Design (IMD) Lab at the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) in Japan. Through generous funding from various agencies and a steadfast commitment to fostering international collaboration, HICUP Lab has hosted two young researchers, Geert Lugtenberg and Juri Yoneyama, who brought fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table.

Geert Lugtenberg, hailing from NAIST’s IMD Lab, embarked on a research journey to HICUP Lab from December 2022 to January 2023. His focus during his visit was on Augmented Reality (AR), specifically delving into the intricate realm of comparing visions and perceptions in relation to projected displays. Geert’s work was driven by the idea of enhancing user experiences in AR by gaining a deeper understanding of how individuals interact with projected visual elements.

Juri Yoneyama’s Breakthrough in Embedded Facial Expressions

Following Geert’s visit, HICUP Lab welcomed another talented researcher, Juri Yoneyama, who stayed from February to March 2023. Juri’s work centered on embedded facial expressions and their role in supporting conversations in mixed reality scenarios. In a world where digital interactions are increasingly common, the ability to convey emotions through avatars and digital representations is becoming paramount.

More details about Juri’s visit can also be seen in this link.

A Testament to Strong Collaboration

These two research visits exemplify the robust collaboration between HICUP Lab and NAIST IMD Lab. The generous funding provided by various agencies underscores the significance of fostering international partnerships in the world of cutting-edge research. It’s not just about knowledge exchange; it’s about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in HCI and AR.
