HICUP Lab Shines at CHI 2023: Pioneering Interactive Paper Displays and Fostering Global Collaboration
HICUP Lab, a research group dedicated in producing cutting-edge research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Augmented Reality (AR), made a significant impact at the recently concluded CHI 2023 conference in Hamburg, Germany. With a dynamic presence at the conference, HICUP Lab showcased two notable contributions that pushed the boundaries of interactive technology and global collaboration.
Revolutionizing Interaction with Interactive Paper Displays
One of HICUP Lab’s groundbreaking contributions to CHI 2023 was an interactive demonstration that redefined how we interact with paper and digital content. This was presented by Cuauhtli Campos, Matjaž Kljun and Klen Čopič Pucihar. The abstract for this demonstration highlighted the challenges posed by existing solutions, which often require additional hardware or specialized manufacturing processes. HICUP Lab tackled these limitations head-on by designing and developing innovative interactive paper-display technologies.
These technologies enable users to seamlessly interact with both physical paper and digital content when paper is placed on a horizontal interactive display, such as a table computer or tablet. Importantly, this approach preserves the screen real estate, ensuring that the content on the paper is seamlessly integrated with the digital interface.
The demonstration showcased twelve practical applications, ranging from interactive learning exercises and drawing aids to instant digitization of handwritten content. Whether it’s annotating blueprints or filling out forms on paper, these applications unlock new opportunities for merging digital functionalities with traditional paper, sparking a thought-provoking discussion about the future role of paper in our society.
Global Plaza: Fostering Inclusion and Collaboration
Beyond their technological innovations, HICUP Lab also contributed to the CHI 2023 conference through a track event called “Global Plaza.” This initiative was organized by one of the lab’s members – Jordan Aiko Deja and aimed to foster global inclusion, equity, and collaboration within the CHI community.
The Global Plaza served as a meeting point for SIGCHI chapters worldwide to showcase their activities, research, and researchers. It provided a unique opportunity for attendees to interact with representatives from diverse CHI communities, exchange ideas, and make meaningful connections. The event’s goal was to break down barriers to collaboration, increase global participation, and create a more inclusive CHI ecosystem.
In the spirit of inclusivity and collaboration, the Global Plaza opened up dialogues about diverse perspectives and encouraged networking among CHI chapters. It played a vital role in reinforcing CHI’s commitment to global diversity and provided a platform for sharing innovative ideas and initiatives from around the world.
Impact Beyond Borders
HICUP Lab’s presence at CHI 2023 underscored its commitment to pushing the boundaries of HCI and interactive technology. Their work on interactive paper displays and their role in fostering global collaboration exemplified the lab’s dedication to both innovation and inclusivity.
As HICUP Lab continues to do groundbreaking research and initiatives, their contributions serve as a reminder that the future of technology is not just about innovation but also about creating a global community that embraces diversity, equity, and collaboration. Their participation in CHI 2023 left a mark, inspiring researchers and industry leaders to push the envelope further in the field of HCI.
